Privacy Policy
Effective: October 14, 2026 Last updated: October 20, 2026
This policy describes how con3code / Kotatsu Rin ("the developer") handles information in SMSReader for iPad and iPhone ("the app"). If this English version and the Japanese version differ, the Japanese version prevails.
1. Information the developer receives
The developer receives no personal or other information through the app. The app does not connect to any server run by the developer, and has no accounts, analytics, advertising or tracking.
2. Information stored on your device
The app stores the following on your device. None of it is sent to the developer or any other party.
- The PDF files you import (kept in the app's documents folder, visible in the Files app)
- Library information (titles, tags, covers, bookmarks, reading positions, the search index, recognized text, translations and so on)
- Writing and highlights on pages (the PDF files themselves are never changed)
- The app's settings
- Passcodes, API keys for outside AI services, and passwords of password-protected PDFs (kept in the device keychain)
Deleting the app removes these from the device (keychain items may remain, as the system keeps them). If device backups such as iCloud Backup are turned on, they may be included in backups according to the settings of Apple's services.
3. Features processed on your device
The following are processed on the device; neither text nor sound leaves it.
- Turning pages and opening books by voice: the microphone's sound is turned into text by the system's speech recognition on the device only. Where it cannot be recognized on the device, the feature is not available. Neither the sound nor the recognized text is kept.
- Reading aloud, with the system's speech synthesis.
- Text recognition of pages without text and of covers, with the system's text recognition.
- Translation with Apple Translate (you may be asked to download language data the first time)
- Translation, summaries, classification by content and title suggestions with Apple Intelligence (on supported devices)
- Search, finding running heads and page numbers, and joining paragraphs across pages
4. Face ID and passcodes
When Face ID is used to unlock, the system does the matching and the app receives only whether it succeeded. Neither the app nor the developer gets any face data. Passcodes are kept in the device keychain, usable on this device only.
5. Siri, Shortcuts and Spotlight
So that books can be opened from Siri, Shortcuts and Spotlight, the app gives the titles of books and the names of shelves to the system on the device. Locked books are left out. What you say to Siri is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.
6. Sending text to outside AI services
Only if you choose an outside AI service in Settings and enter your own API key does the app send text to that service, to translate, summarize and so on.
| Service | Destination |
|---|---|
| Claude (Anthropic) | api.anthropic.com |
| DeepL | api.deepl.com or api-free.deepl.com |
| PLaMo (Preferred Networks) | api.platform.preferredai.jp |
| OpenAI-compatible services | The URL you enter |
- What is sent: the text you selected or of the pages being worked on, with the instructions for the task. The translation panel sends the text of the page on screen and the pages around it.
- When: before anything is sent for the first time, the app shows where it will go and asks for your consent; after that, only when you start a task (in the translation panel, as you move through the pages). Text is never sent in the background.
- How: directly from your device to the service, never through the developer's servers. The developer cannot see it.
- Afterwards: the text is handled under each service's terms and privacy policy, and any charges go to your account with that service. See for example Anthropic's privacy policy and DeepL's privacy policy.
- Text of PDFs that forbid copying is never sent.
7. Other connections
When you share a link to a PDF with the app from another app, the app connects to that link to download the PDF. As with any connection, the server learns your IP address and the like.
Links to web pages open in Safari or your default browser.
8. Information provided by Apple
If you have chosen to share analytics in your device settings, Apple may provide the developer with crash reports and usage statistics that do not identify you, under Apple's privacy policy.
9. Children
The app collects personal information from no one, children included.
10. Changes to this policy
This policy may change as the app changes. Any change will be published on this page with its date.
