Frequently asked questions

How do I import PDFs?

Tap Import ("+"; inside "…" when the window is narrow) at the top right of the Library and choose PDFs in the Files app. You can also choose SMSReader from the share menu in Safari, Mail and other apps, or drag PDFs in on iPad. PDFs put in SMSReader's folder in the Files app are added to the Library too.

What is Home View?

It remembers, book by book, the part of the page you want enlarged. Fit that part to the screen by pinching and dragging, then choose to set the current view as the Home View in the reader's settings. From then on, a tap on the lower half of either edge moves through the page one view at a time (the upper half turns the page).

A vertical Japanese book opens from the left

Change the reading direction in the reader's settings. It is remembered for each book, as are spreads and a cover on its own, set on the same screen.

How do I have the text read aloud?

Choose "Read Aloud" in the reader's "…" menu. The body text is read without running heads and page numbers, words with readings as marked, turning the page at its end. To start from a word, touch and hold it and choose "Read Aloud from Here". In Settings, under reading aloud, choose either the system's Spoken Content voice or a voice the app picks for each language.

Turning pages by voice does not work

As speech is never sent off the device, the feature works only where the device can recognize speech on its own, in English or Japanese. It also needs permission for the microphone and speech recognition: see Settings › Apps › SMSReader. While the text is read aloud the microphone rests, so as not to hear the reading; it listens again when you pause.

How do I use it with Siri?

Say "Continue reading in SMSReader", "Open 〈book〉 in SMSReader", "Read aloud in SMSReader" and so on. The same actions are in the Shortcuts app.

I cannot select or search the text

Scanned PDFs have no text, but pages you open are recognized on the device and can then be selected and searched. To recognize a whole book, choose it in the reader's "…" menu. Recognition may contain mistakes. PDFs whose authors forbid copying cannot be copied or used with translation and the other AI features.

How do I write on pages?

On iPadOS 26 or later, choose writing in the reader's "…" menu to write or highlight with Apple Pencil or your finger. Writing is kept in the app; the PDF file itself is never changed. To share a PDF with your writing, choose the item for it in the same menu.

How do I use the translation panel?

Open the translation panel from the reader's "…" menu and choose the language the book is written in: a translation of each paragraph appears beside the page. Tap a paragraph to see where it is in both. If the book's language and the language to translate into are the same, the panel switches to the default translation language set in Settings.

Do I need an API key?

Apple Translate (on the device) and Apple Intelligence (on supported devices) need no API key. To use Claude, DeepL, PLaMo or an OpenAI-compatible service, enter an API key issued by that service in Settings. Keys are kept in the device keychain, and any charges go to your own account.

Is my text sent anywhere?

Only when you use an outside AI service: after you have seen where it goes and agreed, text is sent when you start a translation or summary. Nothing is sent to the developer. See the privacy policy for details.

Can I lock the app or a book?

In Settings › Security you can lock the app at launch and lock books. To lock a book, touch and hold it in the Library. Face ID can unlock too. If you forget the passcode, reset it with your device passcode from the passcode screen.

How do I show the app in Japanese?

Choose 日本語 under Language in Settings, then quit and reopen the app.
